Introduction

Windows Updates are critical and important as they provide the necessary security patches and performance improvements for your Windows Server operating system.

Why you might need to update manually

  • You might face an issue where you are not able to RDP to a server because of an error related to CredSSP encryption oracle remediation. To fix this, you'll need to install the latest updates for Windows Server.
  • You need to install specific updates for your applications.
  • You need to download updates for your client operating systems so you can deploy them automatically on your infrastructure without having to download the updates for each client operating system.

Note: For this guide, we will be using a Windows Server 2016 machine.

Getting Started

First, you should take note of the version number for your Windows Server machine.

1607 is the stable build channel of Windows Server. There are other higher versions, but these are rapid releases and testing channels.

Now that we have the version number let's browse the Microsoft Update Catalog site. You can click here.

Microsoft Update

You should see this home page. On the right, you can search for the KB number of the update you want to download. It's usually in the format KBXXXXXXX. Or you can also search for the name of the update.

We'll try searching for the latest cumulative update for Windows Server 2016 with build number 1607. Let's try using the search string "cumulative windows server 2016". A lot of results should come up.

Cumulative updates are known as all-in-one- updates. They're usually the collection of the latest updates for a specific Windows Server version. In this case, 2018-09 is the most recent version, and there are three versions of that update.

1709 and 1803 are for the other builds for Windows Server 2016. The one we'll want for 1607 is the one without a build number on the update name which on the list is KB4457127 so let's download that one. Click on the Download button.

Once that's downloaded, look for the file windows10.0-kb4457127-x64_53e4351d1e0233b3e55ed7fd70b6dca54b0ab878.msu and then run the installer. It should run automatically, and if you have any prerequisite updates missing, it should prompt you to install those as well. Repeat this process for any updates you want to install manually.
